As our day winds down, we are known for having a little “treat” before bedtime. Usually ice cream or yogurt. I like ice cream, myself.
As the dementia and language issues of aphasia manifest themselves over time, new habits emerge… and lately it is to “choose” the last option presented. Truthfully, when given a list of two items, the second is the only one remembered because the first has disappeared forever.
But it’s important to show her respect by giving choices and honoring her answers.
Thus, our conversations go like this:
Me: “Time for a snack… tonight, would you like ice cream or yogurt?”
Susan:” Yogurt.”
So Yogurt it is.
But I like ice cream.
And think of the ice cream I could have had while I eat the yogurt.
Next night.
Me: “Time for a snack… tonight, would you like ice cream or yogurt?”
Susan: “Yogurt.”
So, Yogurt it is. Again. Sigh.
I like ice cream.
Next night.
Me to myself: “Wait a minute… she chooses the last option… I can fix this!”
Me with clever smile: “Time for a snack… tonight would you like yogurt or ice cream?”
Expectant pause before triumph...
Susan: “Yogurt.”
Me to myself: “Rats!”
